I toppsjiktet innen mineralologi

Professor Suzanne McEnroe ved Institutt for geologi og bergteknikk, NTNU er utvnevnt Fellow of the Mineralogical Association of America (MSA). MSA er en av de største geologiforeningene i verden, og Fellows er medlemmer som har bidratt vesentlig innen mineralogi, krystallografi, geokjemi og petrologi.

Antall Fellows som velges hvert år kan ikke overstige 0,5 prosent av MSAs totale medlemsmasse. I år ble det utnevnt MSA-medlemmer fra Canada, Kina, Italia, Norge, Frankrike, Russland og USA. Med professor McEnroe er det i alt åtte fra de nordiske landene.

Magnetisme i stein og mineraler

I begrunnelsen til Senior «Fellow» ved MSA, Stearns A. Morse fra University of Massachusetts, står det følgende:

«In making the award of Fellowship, the Mineralogical Society of America notes that Professor McEnroe has contributed significantly to the advancement of the sciences of mineralogy, crystallography, and petrology.

She is especially regarded as having caused a paradigm shift in our understanding of how Earth materials acquire strong and stable magnetization within the continental crust, and how they contribute to magnetic anomalies at the planetary scale.

A key to this work is the discovery and explanation of what is called lamellar magnetism (a property of remanent magnetization discovered during study of crustal igneous and metamorphic rocks that were cooled slowly during uplift toward the surface) in crystals.  Professor McEnroe has transformed the way that rock magnetic research is done today, and this is a profound achievement.»
