French Polynesia on July 2, 2016 is commemorating the first atmosphere nuclear test at Mururoa atoll, code named Aldebaran, that was made 50 years ago on July 2, 1966. One hundred and ninety-three nuclear tests, in atmosphere and later underground, have been conducted in the Mururoa and Fangataufa atolls in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia, through 1966 – 1996. / AFP PHOTO / AFP PHOTO
